Christy and Bob started hanging out together in ninth grade. Since they weren’t old enough to date, they spent a lot of time at each other’s houses. This seemed like a great idea because their parents were home, but as they looked back years later after they were married and had children, they decided some things weren’t as healthy as they’d seemed. Christy and Bob had struggled with sexuality all through high school and college. It became a constant battle.

It started when Christy’s parents went to sleep and allowed Bob to stay at the house with her, watching movies. They now realize that their parents should have been more involved, either by staying up until Bob left or by asking him to leave when they went to bed. Instead, the parents chose the “kids-will-be-kids” approach.

It’s important that we give our children freedom in a controlled environment. However, we must not create compromising situations in the name of trust. Put yourself in your daughter’s shoes. Allow her to make her own choices, but don’t be naive enough to set her up for a fall.
